Return to the Lord your God

God's call to us during the season of Lent is to "return to the lord your God."  We express our desire to do this by practicing three traditional pillars of Lent:

  1. Prayer
  2. Fasting and
  3. Almsgiving

However, because these are external signs, they alone aren't enough because the core of our repentance (changing one's direction, making a U-turn) begins in our hearts.  "Rend your hearts, not your garments and return to the Lord your God."  it is through the changing of our hearts, along with those external signs, that we are equipped for our journey back to God.  And this journey continues throughout our lives.

In our observance of the Marian month we should take into account the season of the Liturgical Year which largely corresponds with the fifty days of Easter.  Our pious exercises could emphasize Our Lady's participation in the Paschal mystery and in Pentecost with which the Church begins.  The pious exercises connected with the month of May can easily highlight the earthly role played by the glorified Queen of Heaven, here and now, in the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy).
